Between April and May, the bulb fields in the Netherlands are bursting with colour. Millions of brightly coloured flowers come into bloom at Keukenhof Gardens and you will get the chance to visit them on this Dutch rail holiday. Also included in the holiday is a leisurely walking tour of the main sights and attractions of Amsterdam, as well as a visit to the Royal Delft porcelain factory.
Day 1 - By train to Delft
We leave St Pancras International by Eurostar to Brussels, where we change trains and travel across the Dutch border to Rotterdam. The final leg of today's journey takes us by coach to the town of Delft, one of the prettiest in the Netherlands, famous for its pottery. Treelined canals and cobbled streets wind away from Markt, Delft's large, open central square. We spend four nights at the 3* Best Western Museumhotel, and tonight we dine together in a local restaurant. (D)
Day 2 - Royal Delft Porcelain
This morning we visit the Royal Delft porcelain factory, where the distinctive 'Delft Blue' design is made. Here you can see the intricate designs being finished and painted. Following the tour you are free to continue exploring Delft at leisure. Perhaps discover the town's connection with Dutch royalty in the Prinsenhof Museum, or admire the works of Delft's most famous artist in the Johannes Vermeer Museum. You could take a tour of Delft's canals by boat, or visit the city's New Church which has the second-highest tower in the Netherlands. (B)
Day 3 - Keukenhof Gardens
Today we take a coach trip to the incredible Keukenhof Gardens. The gardens only open in the spring, providing an incredible seasonal display of tulips, crocuses, daffodils and other flowering plants; millions of bulbs are planted each year and flowers of every hue sway in the breeze as far as the eye can see. Water features cascade through colourful displays of blooms and themed gardens delight the crowds. Keukenhof also has beautiful sculpture gardens, greenhouses, a windmill, and has several cafés. Your time here is free for you to explore the grounds at your leisure, before we return to Delft in the afternoon. (B)
Day 4 - Amsterdam
This morning we travel by train to Amsterdam for a guided tour of the city's must-see sights. Our guide tells us of the city's history and traditions as we explore the major landmarks and hidden gems of Holland's capital. Following the tour you are free to discover the marvellous city at leisure. You could discover the city by boat on a cruise through the myriad of canals which lace the centre - an ideal way to view the 18th century merchant's houses lining the waterways and admire the lovely architecture. Alternatively, there are some superb museums including the Rijksmuseum, which houses a magnificent collection of art from the Dutch Golden Age, the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House. Back in Delft, we enjoy dinner together at a local restaurant. (B,D)
Day 5 - Homeward bound
Leaving Delft, we transfer by coach to Rotterdam, where we join the train to Brussels. Here we connect with the Eurostar service to London. (B)
